Eating My Passion

This summer I’ve been afforded the unique opportunity to work as a marketing intern at Modern Luxury magazine in Beverly Hills! While publishing and editorial weren’t initially on my radar, I couldn’t be happier with the exposure this internship has given me in the industry. While office work consists mostly of creative blurb writing for event recaps, brainstorming for social media, heavy research on industry trends, and updating excruciatingly long guest lists, this month’s issue of Angeleno is The Feast Edition, which has shone light on the silver lining in this biz for me! Sure, Angeleno may be a luxury lifestyle magazine, but I’ve never felt more connected to it until now! Most people eat to live, but I just might be one of those who live… I mean love to eat.

My boss handed us his credit card and said get creative, but be back by 1. Immediately, I knew where we had to go, especially since we’re in Beverly Hills! We packed some magazines and made way to our first destination, GREENDOOR Powered by Intelligentsia. Since it wasn’t our card, we didn’t want to go too overboard with the treats and drinks, but it’s always completely necessary to order an avocado toast, right? I was honestly expecting a tiny sliver of toast but my heart cried with joy when I saw the giant toastie piled high with veggies and a runny egg! We also ordered the banana pop tart and a vegan chocolate donut with red white and blue sprinkles, since the next day was 4th of July!  The expectations were high for the banana pop tart which were immediately crushed when we all took our first bites. I’d definitely say skip the tart! But, I will say the vegan donut was delicious! It wasn’t dry and dense like most vegan pastries, and I could taste the coconut oil in the ganache which paired perfectly with the light chocolate flavor of the donut itself. I suggested we order it just for its sprinkles, but lesson learned: do judge a donut by its sprinkles.

By now you’re probably wondering how the heck the drinks are. My coworker ordered a matcha latte, which arrived so beautifully to our table. Considering her teeth and tongue were green, and she was left with a matcha-mustache and an empty cup, I’d say it was fabulous on her part! I myself, ordered the Angeleno, which is a quad shot on ice with milk and syrup. Booooy, was I WIRED after our shoot. It was a light syrup, which was perfect since I don’t like super sugary drinks. I enjoyed! Basically, I ordered an Angeleno latte for Angeleno magazine, and my Angeleno self.

Everything totaled about $40. For the amount of food and drink that we ordered, I think the price was just right, especially since we’re in Beverly Hills . The service was great and the cafe itself is a gem. The aesthetics are ridiculous which brings me to this very important question: did you actually go to GREENDOOR if you didn’t Instagram it? The lights. The floors. The tables. THE DOORS!! It’s all perfect!

Our next stop was suggested by my coworker. We found ourselves scoring a parking spot on 3rd, and running single file to The Izakaya by Katsu-Ya. Word is, if you’re the first 10 people in line for lunch, you get an awesome deal. Whatever that meant, we were 5th in line and waited for about 10 minutes. We finally broke through the doors and were handed menus with this special deal. It was indeed worth the run and the wait. The lunch combo for the first 10 people consists of:

  • 4 piece California Roll
  • 4 piece Spicy Tuna Roll
  • Salmon Nigiri
  • Shrimp Nigiri
  • Yellowtail Nigiri
  • Tuna Nigiri
  • Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice Nigiri
  • Miso Grilled Salmon
  • Miso Soup
  • Salad

Are you full just from reading all of that? Well you won’t be when you learn that the price for all of that is $9.80! WHAT? You think I’m full… of it? No no, I was ridiculously full, especially after the avocado toast and coffee we had 30 minutes before!

Everything was of high quality, including the service! My favorites were the Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice and the Miso Grilled Salmon. We actually ordered a full plate of the tuna, plus a bowl of edamame and shishito peppers! Gotta have your greens right? I urge you to head over for their lunch special. It’s a total steal! They have locations here in LA, Sherman Oaks and Manhattan Beach!

Unfortunately since it was an out of the blue (or green) day, I didn’t have my camera on me. But fortunately, my coworker Ally has the iPhone X AND painted nails, meaning she was our gorgeous hand model for everything! Thanks Ally!

I’m honored and thrilled to say my manager and marketing coordinator loved the content, and posted it on social media right away! It was a very rewarding and delicious morning; one of the best work days I’ve had this summer. I’m looking forward to more food adventures for this month’s issue [and of course the rest of my life]. Thanks Modern Luxury!

If you know of any awesome shops local or abroad that I should check out, comment them here! Or share your photos and tag me on Instagram @jenaceret! I’ll travel far and wide for a great cup of joe and food. Thanks for reading. 🙂
