Bago Maze & Vineyards

When road tripping along Australia’s east coast, it’d be silly not to make a pit stop for free tastings in the wine country! Located in Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Bago Maze & Vineyards is nestled comfortably among the quiet, dusty roads of Heron’s Creek. It’s around a 4 hour drive North of Sydney, or a 5 hour drive South of Gold Coast.

My girls and I arrived at the cellar, ready to savor some aussie vino. We were assisted by the beautiful Rhianna, who made our experience unforgettable! She started us off with some sweeter whites, working down the line to dry reds. Of the [what seemed like] hundreds of wines we tried, our baby taste buds stayed on the sweet side of the spectrum. We all shared a tasteful favorite, their new Rosella Red. It’s rich, nutty and not too dry for my newbie-self! I also grabbed a bottle of their Bago Jazz, a semi-sweet white. The winery also offers a delicious spread of local meats and cheeses to compliment your drinks at such an affordable price! Bottles range from $15-30AUD here which I think is an absolute steal.

The Maze

What makes this winery so special among the stellar service and delicious wines, is the vibrant hedge maze just outside of the building. Standing 2.3 meters high, it seems almost impossible to make it out of the winding paths, especially with the wine flowing through your bloodstream! I figured it’d be easy from the outside, but when I heard my friends’ voices which seemed very close, it took almost 20 minutes to find one of them. She got lost trying to find her way back to our other friend. If you were wondering, yes… it is scary! But it’s so beautiful so it somewhat evens out as an enjoyable yet life threatening experience. Kidding! But I definitely had thoughts of what I would eat if I were stuck in their forever… Hedge salad, anyone?

There’s absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t visit Bago Maze & Winery if you’re looking for things to do in Australia. Plus, if you give your surroundings a few minutes, I guarantee you’ll spot some wild kangaroo! Find it along Bago Road, just off of the Pacific Hwy! There are signs that lead you there.
